Every day, we all interact with many people in our lives, and we probably disagree with the vast majority of them on a lot of things: politics, religion, sex, relationships, morality, you name it. However, it’s not as if there are only two ways of relating to a person-either agree on everything, or preach at them about the things you disagree on. It feels wishy-washy to them, as if it requires that they stop thinking the other side is wrong. This kind of gracious dialogue is hard for a lot of people. You can find ways to build on that without having to compromise on your most deeply held values. Perhaps you and the other person have very different views on some things but both share a concern for the emotional health of gay people who feel hurt by the church. “We must be willing, too, to seek common ground and shared interests. Joe follows Amy to California…and then that plot is essentially dropped and never revisited until one of the final chapters of the book when you are too tired and bored to care anymore. Joe is meant to be brooding in New York, working in the bookstore with the creepy cage in the basement. Joe is not a character that is meant to be in sunny California. I was hoping that would improve once Joe was finally settled in California, but it never got better. The beginning of the book captured my attention, but beyond that, I hated the direction that this book went in after Joe moved to California. Honestly, I didn’t like much about Hidden Bodies. Joe makes some new friends on his quest to find Amy and immerses himself in the lifestyle of someone trying to “make it” in Hollywood. After a few chapters of what feels like the perfect match for Joe, something happens, and he is suddenly dropping everything to follow her across the country to LA. Hidden Bodies picks up where You ends with Joe hiring the obviously lying Amy to work in the bookstore. Possible spoilers ahead if you have not read You. Hello, fellow readers! I put off writing this review, mostly because I am a procrastinator, but also because I couldn’t put in to words how disappointing Hidden Bodies was for me. Honoria’s life as a Viscountess has been nothing but a misery she’d brought upon herself with her own cowardice. The woman whose life he just saved from bleeding out on his table… The beauty with whom he shared his first taste of passion, before she gave her hand to another. The heiress who shattered his hopes and then tread upon the shards of his heart with her bejeweled slippers. Alone by choice, he swore never to open his heart to another. Ruthlessly intelligent, he was able to lift himself from his beginnings as coal-stained bastard through merciless discipline and inexhaustible skill. The Goode Girls are aren’t simply good, they’re stunning.ĭoctor Titus Conleith emerged from his time as a battlefield surgeon with a mysterious fortune, a lethal secret, and a demon on his back. When he finally gets down to the harbor he is met by a fisherman who is as surprised to see him as the boy was to see his Zephyr fly. From the hilltop the boy watches the two strange boats deposit the Zephyr in the harbor. He starts walking to look for help, and after a long time he crests a hill to see the Zephyr being towed by two boats that are sailing through the air. When he wakes up he and his boat, the Zephyr, are stranded on a strange beach far above the high-water mark. As he sails out of the harbor a big gust strikes the boat and he is knocked unconscious by the boom. One day the boy decided to go out despite the storm brewing just outside the harbor and against the warnings of an old fisherman. The old man begins to tell the story of a young boy who, years ago, was the most talented sailor in the harbor and who never missed an opportunity to prove it, performing feats that none of the grown men would dare try. A weather beaten old man is sitting near the wreck, and the author asks him how the boat came to be there, so far from the water. As he is exploring the sea shore near a small fishing village, the author comes upon the wreck of a small wooden sailboat high on a clifftop. One of the first physicians to understand and use chloroform and ether, he became a physician to Queen Victoria, helping her deliver her innumerable children with far less pain. He was born poor in Northern England and had to get an education by force of intellect and character. John Snow was a true outsider to Victorian professional medicine. The excitement of the book is how one man understood how to cure this plague and how he used a new way to display information to do so. The book is about something as messy as information, excrement, and how its disposal caused an outbreak of cholera in Victorian London. The Ghost Map shows how information actually works in the world. In my days as an Information management consultant, I believed, as did all my colleagues, that if people were just shown correct and feasible information they would act in accordance with it – they would follow where it led. Concentrate on being speechlessly in awe before His glorious presence. Stop being trivial about the relationship. Of course, he doesn’t recommend you stop talking and walking with God. Short SummaryĬhan starts off his super-spiritual Christian book in a shocking and unconventional way: by naming the first chapter “Stop Praying.” So without further ado, here is my Crazy Love by Francis Chan summary and review. However, my main focus will be on the book which is the “primary” source of content. I cover all of the materials here in one review since it all is the same material and works so closely together. Neither of those extra study materials are needed, but are designed to help individuals and especially groups to get the most out of the book. I read this book with a few friends and also went through the interactive workbook and the DVD together. It strips away the excess of church culture and trims the fat of misleading Christian lingo to face the reality of being with and abiding in God. Most Christian living books fall somewhere between the lines of “new believer” and “Bible scholar,” but what’s interesting about Crazy Love is its ability to inspire, encourage, and correct believers at every stage of faith.įrancis Chan has become sort of a staple of radical modern scripturalism in America, and Crazy Love is one of the staples of Chan’s written works to date. That’s sort of the takeaway from this easy-to-read yet lifestyle-challenging book. God’s love for us is crazy! And in turn, we should seek to have a crazy kind of love for Him as well. When Chouette is born small and broken-winged, Tiny works around the clock to meet her daughter’s needs. You think this baby is going to be like you, but it’s not like you at all, she warns him. When she discovers that her husband is on an obsessive and increasingly dangerous quest to find a “cure” for their daughter, Tiny must decide whether Chouette should be raised to fit in or to be herself-and learn what it truly means to be a mother.Īrresting, darkly funny, and unsettling, Chouette is a brilliant exploration of ambition, sacrifice, perceptions of ability, and the ferocity of motherly love. An exhilarating, provocative novel of motherhood in extremis. Even in those times when Chouette’s behaviors grow violent and strange, Tiny’s loving commitment to her daughter is unwavering. The book has deep and universal resonance. Chouette, which abounds with humor and lush imagery, forces parents to consider their relationship with their children. Left on her own to care for a child who seems more predatory bird than baby, Tiny vows to raise Chouette to be her authentic self. New York Times Book Review Oshetsky’s book is surrealism at its best. “You think this baby is going to be like you, but it’s not like you at all,” she warns him.
